How to keep things tidy: storage solutions for every kitchen II.

In the previous instalment of our series We wrote about how to go about planning the storage capacity of your kitchen units. In this article, we’d like to introduce the different types of storage units. We hope that, taken together, these two articles will help you find the solutions that are best suited to your needs.

Closed kitchen cupboard

The most obvious storage solution – the first thing that springs to mind – is a closed base or wall cupboard. The advantage is that nobody can see behind the kitchen cupboard doors, so even if we don’t arrange things in neat rows, it doesn’t give the impression of being untidy. A closed kitchen cupboard is one of the most defining design elements, so it’s worth taking great care when choosing one.

Kitchen cupboard with glass doors

Kitchen cupboards with glass doors They can be used in both traditional and modern kitchens. The advantage is that, although they are somewhat enclosed, if you choose a translucent version, you can see what’s inside, making it easy to find your way around. Furthermore, in kitchens where only closed cupboards are used, the overall effect can often feel cluttered; this can be effectively counteracted by incorporating cupboards with glass doors.

Open shelves

Open shelving is very fashionable, but it’s not for everyone. If organising is your hobby or you only have a few items to store on them, then go for it. If, on the other hand, you don’t have time to keep the items on them tidy all the time, we’d recommend a closed solution instead. However, adding the odd open shelving unit here and there can look great – for example, to display your collection of spices in stylish jars or your cookery books.

Back panel solutions

In small kitchens in particular, we should aim to make the most of every little nook and cranny. However, we must bear in mind that storage units take up space on the worktop, so we recommend using them where it is possible to fit a wider worktop. You could fit a shelf here, or even closed kitchen cupboards. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

A kitchen island as storage space

A on the kitchen island Many people create a dining area, and in some cases, if there is enough space for a larger unit, they may even fit a sink, hob or oven into it. With peninsulas or smaller islands, it is also possible to incorporate storage units. Here too, there are both open and closed solutions available; choose the option that best suits your needs.

Many people feel that no matter how much storage space there is in a kitchen, it’s never enough. Although we’ve suggested starting the design of your kitchen by thinking about what you’d like to store in the room, it might also be worth considering exactly which kitchen utensils you actually need. Before planning, a quick clear-out – giving away any unused kitchen utensils – can free up a great deal of space, which we can then use to incorporate other features.
