How to keep things tidy: storage solutions for every kitchen I.

Whatever kind of kitchen we’re dreaming of, it’s worth thinking carefully about what storage solutions we need right at the start of the kitchen design process. It’s much better to work out what we need in advance than to try and find space for everything afterwards, once the kitchen has already been designed.

Whether we’re looking to renovate our existing kitchen or planning a completely new flat or house, it’s very important to think carefully about how much storage space we need. There are loads of things in the kitchen that need a place, from cutlery and small kitchen appliances to the ingredients needed for cooking. But how do we go about planning it?

How do you use your kitchen?

Think about your everyday routine in the kitchen. Which activities make up your daily routine? Which ones do you do only occasionally but regularly, and which ones only from time to time? Based on this, it’s easier to draw up a list of the items and utensils that are worth keeping to hand, and those you can tuck away at the back of the cupboard because you’ll only need them from time to time. It’s worth making a list of everything that will need storage space and working out the details from there. It’s a good idea to start with this; coming up with the design is just the next step.

What’s bothering you about your current kitchen?

If this isn’t your first kitchen and you’ve had experience with any kind of kitchen before, you can think about what was missing in the past and what you’d like to change. Is there anything that bothers you about your current kitchen, or anything else you might need? Perhaps you’d like more space for your frying pans or plates? Don’t know where to put your kitchen appliances? Do you collect cookery books and find it a hassle to keep running back and forth to the bookcase in the living room? Perhaps you have too many empty cupboards – would fewer be enough? Would it be better to have more open shelving in a certain area, so things are within easy reach whilst you’re cooking? Or is it the opposite – would you prefer to hide the items currently on display behind closed cupboards? Make a list of the points above, and you’ll be one step closer to having a kitchen where you’ll enjoy spending time on a day-to-day basis.

Wardrobe or chest of drawers?

Gather ideas from other people’s kitchens or even on social media, and pick up some tips on what to store and how. It might seem obvious to you that certain things should be kept in a cupboard, for example, but it might actually be much more practical to keep them in a drawer – or vice versa.

Don’t forget about the design either

Although the first step is to think through and plan the functions, we mustn’t overlook aesthetic considerations either. For example, open shelves are very fashionable these days, but it’s worth considering whether we’ll be able to keep them tidy. Wouldn’t a closed kitchen cupboard be more practical instead, where we can tuck things away, thereby hiding any clutter? Another drawback of shelving solutions is the build-up of dust. Do we want to dust everything on a daily basis, and do we have the patience and inclination to do so? We don’t want to put anyone off, but it’s worth bearing these considerations in mind. Let’s pay attention to proportions; let’s not overcrowd the space, whilst at the same time ensuring we have enough storage space. It’s not that simple, is it?

Coming up with storage solutions is perhaps one of the aspects of kitchen design that requires the most attention. That is precisely why it is worth seeking the advice of an experienced kitchen designer their help.
