How to design your kitchen so that everything is within easy reach

It is no coincidence that a truly well-functioning kitchen is practical. The key lies in careful planning and the correct positioning of kitchen appliances. This is particularly important in the case of bespoke kitchen furniture, as every centimetre counts. The right design not only makes the kitchen look better, but also makes everyday life much more comfortable and efficient. In a well-designed kitchen, you don’t have to move about unnecessarily, everything is within easy reach, and cooking truly becomes a pleasure. Let’s take a look at what you should bear in mind.

The efficient kitchen work triangle

The basis of a functional kitchen is what is known as the ‘work triangle’. This connects the three most important points: the fridge, the sink and the hob.

Ideally, these form a triangle, making it quick and easy to move between them. This reduces unnecessary steps and makes the cooking process run more smoothly.

It’s a good idea to position the fridge near the kitchen entrance so that everything can be put away easily after shopping. The sink usually takes centre stage, as most of the work takes place there. A hob works best when there is sufficient worktop space available next to it.

The ideal placement of kitchen appliances

The location of the fridge is crucial. It should be easily accessible, but must not obstruct movement. If it is placed in an area with too much footfall, it can become a constant „point of collision” in the kitchen.

A sink is most practical when it is close to both the fridge and the hob. If you have a dishwasher, it’s worth positioning it right next to the sink so that loading it is quick and convenient.

Always leave enough space around the hob. This is not just a matter of convenience, but also of safety. It is important to have space to put down hot pans and to ensure there is adequate ventilation.

When positioning an oven, ergonomics are the most important consideration. A built-in oven at a comfortable height makes it much easier to use, and means you don’t have to keep bending down.

It is a good idea to position the microwave so that it is easily accessible but does not get in the way of the main cooking processes. The same applies to additional appliances, such as a steam oven or wine cooler: these are best placed in supplementary areas.

Workbench and space optimisation

One of the most valuable parts of the kitchen is the worktop. If there isn’t enough space, you’ll notice it straight away in your day-to-day life.

It is important that there is a so-called „work surface” next to every large appliance, where you can immediately place ingredients or finished dishes. Ideally, these should be no more than 1–1.2 metres away from the appliances.

The best worktop is the one situated between the sink and the hob. This is where most of the work is done, so this section should be the largest and most practical.

It’s a good idea to tuck away smaller kitchen appliances, for example in tall cupboards or in a specially designed „breakfast nook”. This not only looks better, but also makes the space much tidier.

What factors influence the layout?

The size and layout of the kitchen are key factors in determining what is possible. Windows, doors and natural light all influence the decisions you make.

The sink, for example, should ideally be placed near a window so that you can work in natural light. The hob, on the other hand, should not be placed directly in front of a window, as this makes ventilation and cleaning more difficult.

It is also important that larger appliances do not obstruct traffic. A fridge or dishwasher placed in the wrong spot can easily cause a bottleneck.

The size of the selected units is also crucial. A larger cooler, for example, takes up more space, and this must be taken into account at the design stage.

 The role of compromise

No two kitchens are the same, so there’s no such thing as a perfect solution. Every space is different, which is why compromises often have to be made.

The most important question in such cases is: what is the priority? Appearance or functionality? In a well-designed kitchen, the two are in balance, but if you have to choose, usability always takes precedence.

An experienced construction company can help ensure that these compromises do not detract from the end result, but are instead the result of informed decisions.

Why is it worth leaving it to the experts?

Designing and building bespoke kitchen furniture is a complex process. It is not just about making it „look good”, but also about ensuring it functions well in the long term.

An experienced contractor knows exactly how to coordinate the positioning of machinery, storage and work processes. They take the characteristics of the space into account and suggest solutions that actually work in practice.

The layout of your kitchen appliances fundamentally determines how convenient and efficient your kitchen will be. A well-thought-out layout saves you time, energy and a great deal of frustration.

And with bespoke kitchen furniture, this is precisely the greatest advantage: everything can be tailored to your needs. When both the design and the craftsmanship are in expert hands, the end result will be a kitchen that is not only beautiful but also truly liveable – every single day.
