What’s on top of the kitchen cupboard? 5 tips to make sure this space doesn’t go to waste!

With perhaps a few exceptions, every kitchen has an unused space: the area between the top of the kitchen cupboards and the ceiling. Many people leave it empty, whilst others use it to store dust-collecting items. Most people don’t really give much thought to how this space could be put to good use. We, however, would like to show you a few decorative and stylish storage options – we’re sure you’ll find something you like.

Let everything have its place

When we think of things stored on top of a cupboard, clutter is usually the first thing that springs to mind. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. With a little imagination and some creative design, you can turn the space under the ceiling into something both useful and tidy.  As shown in the picture, you could even sneak in a bit of mood lighting there – a spot you’d previously have simply tried to draw attention away from. Just don’t put your breakfast cereal bowl there; choose beautiful items that you use less often.

Make your kitchen feel cosy with plants

Some plants always look good in the kitchen. This is particularly true if you have a kitchen with a very clean, simple and understated colour scheme. It often happens that, even though we’d really like to, we simply can’t find a place for them. However, they’ll fit on top of the cupboard, and what’s more, they create a much cosier atmosphere. Make sure you always choose plants that are suited to the light conditions available.

Double the number of wall units

It may seem obvious, but it rarely occurs to our customers that simply by doubling the number of wall units, we can create an incredible amount of storage space in the kitchen. The cupboards can even extend right up to the ceiling, allowing us to make the most of the wall space even in smaller kitchens.  To avoid a cluttered look, we can also incorporate a few glass-door cupboards, which will give the final result a more airy feel.

Seasonal decorations

The festive season is just around the corner, so the question of decorations will soon be on our minds. We spend a particularly long time in the kitchen at this time of year, so we can heighten our anticipation by doing everything we can to bring the Christmas spirit into this space too. Space is often limited in the kitchen, so there isn’t much room for decorations either. The top row of cupboards can be the perfect spot if we fancy changing the atmosphere in our kitchen every now and then. It’s not just for the festive season – if it brings us joy, we can create decorations to suit the seasons, or even for birthdays, baby showers and so on.

Don’t hide it, highlight it

Instead of trying to hide the area above the kitchen cupboards, draw attention to it. Choose wallpaper with a bold pattern for that area, or place colourful objects or works of art there. If it’s very high up, don’t choose everyday items; focus instead on the visual appeal. You wouldn’t want to be climbing a ladder every day, would you?
