The idea of L-shaped kitchen units often arises due to a lack of space. It can also be practical for large kitchens, particularly in situations where a linear layout would be too long and result in a kitchen that is difficult to navigate. We’ve put together some tips that are worth bearing in mind if you’re considering this type of kitchen.
An L-shaped kitchen is essentially a corner layout in which the various elements are arranged along two adjacent walls. The advantage of this layout is that it makes maximum use of wall space; moreover, thanks to the space-saving design, it can give the room an airy feel. If you’re dreaming of a kitchen island, it’s highly likely that this layout will accommodate it perfectly.
The essential kitchen triangle
We cannot emphasise enough that taking the kitchen triangle into account forms the basis of all kitchen furniture design! This means that there must be enough space between the oven, the sink and the fridge to allow for comfortable movement. The ideal layout is one where there is a minimum of 120 and a maximum of 270 centimetres between the units. This ensures smooth movement and adequate space within the room. In an L-shaped kitchen, this can be easily achieved thanks to the perpendicular layout. Think about it: if you need something from the fridge whilst cooking, you simply turn round and you’re there straight away, without having to walk long distances.

Making the most of vertical spaces
The two wall surfaces provide plenty of space for kitchen cupboards, so if we need to, we can easily maximise the storage capacity. And who says you can’t have, say, two wall units one above the other? To avoid a cluttered look, it’s worth combining closed cupboards with shelves; or, if that’s not to your taste, we recommend glass-door units as a temporary solution.
Your dream kitchen island
An L-shaped kitchen layout provides the perfect space for a kitchen island. You’ll free up plenty of space on the worktop if you include the hob in this area, and you’ll also gain even more storage space. We have written in more detail about the advantages of kitchen islands previously.
Clever corner solutions
Don’t let the corners go to waste either; make the most of the space with cupboards designed specifically for this purpose. With bespoke kitchen furniture, there are far more options available than with, say, a ready-made set.
Community kitchen
It can be the perfect layout if you plan to place a dining table at the centre of an L-shaped kitchen. This way, you can chat with family or friends gathered around the table even whilst you’re cooking. The kitchen island mentioned earlier can also form an important part of the communal space. It’s often a problem that whilst the host is bustling about in the kitchen, they miss out on the company of their guests. With this layout, no one will be left out of the party.
Whatever the size or shape of your kitchen, we’re sure to find a layout that makes the most of the space in terms of both function and design.
