FAQ: Acrylic kitchen furniture

Many people praise acrylic kitchen furniture, and we are also keen to recommend it to our customers. And with good reason. It’s a high-quality material, and it looks beautiful. It’s available in a huge range of colours, so there’s something to suit everyone’s taste. We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions; if we’ve left anything out, please feel free to drop us a line and we’ll add it.

How durable is the material?

There’s no such thing as a piece that lasts forever, but acrylic certainly comes close. It certainly won’t be affected by everyday use; it can withstand a great deal of wear and tear. It doesn’t crack or bend; it really is incredibly durable. In fact, it’s 17 times stronger than glass. Of course, we can say this with certainty about the acrylic materials we use, as – as with everything – there are lower-quality versions of this material available on the market.

Does it require any special maintenance?

Acrylic is a non-porous material, so there is no need to seal it with any kind of sealant. This means that not only your kitchen units but also your worktop can be made from this material, as liquids and dirt will simply run off the surface. This is also important from a hygiene perspective, as it makes it easy to prevent the growth of mould and mildew.

How should it be cleaned?

It does make a difference whether the surface is high-gloss or matt acrylic, but generally speaking, they are not at all difficult to clean. As we’re talking about seamless panels, they’re easy to clean. Thanks to their water-repellent properties, accidental splashes, spills and various types of dirt cannot be absorbed into the material. What you’ll need: 2 clean cloths – one damp and one dry – and a good-quality, alcohol-based cleaning product.

How much is that?

It’s true that this isn’t the cheapest material on the market, but it’s matched by outstanding quality. In terms of value for money, it’s brilliant; this level of quality isn’t usually found at this price. If you’re planning for the long term and don’t want to replace your kitchen units every two years – and why would you? – this is definitely a good choice.

Should you choose a high-gloss or a matt finish?

It’s a matter of personal preference, but there are still a few things worth knowing before you make your choice. High-gloss acrylic fronts look great even in small spaces, as the light reflected off their surface makes the room appear optically larger. However, as fingerprints show up more clearly on them than on their matt counterparts, they are less practical if you have young children. Another advantage of matt acrylic fronts is that, no matter the angle from which you view them, you get a consistent colour appearance; they are less affected by lighting, which, of course, must still be chosen carefully in this case too.

What are the disadvantages of using acrylic?

It is very important to choose good quality materials and a suitable professional! This is because lower-quality acrylic fronts scratch very easily and do not stand the test of time at all. What’s more, working with acrylic requires expertise, so an unskilled joiner will produce a shoddy result even from the finest material. Let’s make sure we do our research before buying, and let’s definitely expect a long-term guarantee!
