Is being close to nature important to you? Here’s how to bring it into your kitchen!

It is a proven fact that maintaining a close connection with nature not only improves our mood but can also have a positive impact on our overall quality of life. However, not everyone is lucky enough to have windows overlooking a garden, a field or a river. Even if you’re not blessed with a stunning view, you can still conjure up a little bit of that natural atmosphere in your kitchen. Here are a few
design advice, if that’s what we’re looking for.

Fresh air and natural light

Getting the right amount of natural light throughout the day can do wonders for our mood. That’s why, when designing or renovating a kitchen, it’s worth considering the room’s layout and choosing windows and doors that let in as much light as possible. Unless you’re building from scratch, the number of windows and doors is fixed, but it does make a difference what you make of them.

We should also consider whether we really want a completely enclosed kitchen, as the fewer partitions – walls, doors – there are, the better the light can flow through the whole flat. It isn’t always possible to remove a partition wall entirely, but even simply removing a door or fitting a small internal window can make a big difference.

Another compromise could be the partial or complete use of glass blocks on individual walls, which results in a truly aesthetic and modern solution.

Let’s add a bit of green to the kitchen

Plants look great in every room, and the kitchen is no exception. We can choose houseplants, but if we want to combine pleasure with practicality, we should opt for varieties whose leaves or fruit we can also use whilst cooking. You could even create a mini „herb garden” in pots, or set up a little corner for medicinal herbs. Be creative – even if the room is small, you’re sure to be able to find space for a few plants in the kitchen. If we have enough space, we can place them on the worktop, the windowsill or shelves, or even hang them up. The possibilities are limited only by our imagination.

The use of natural materials

When designing our kitchen furniture, we should choose natural materials, or artificial materials that closely resemble them. Thanks to the modern kitchen furniture industry, we can now choose from countless options that look almost identical to the real thing, but are much more durable and/or cheaper. In such cases, it is also worth considering the level of wear and tear our furniture will be subjected to, and choosing pieces that appeal to us aesthetically and suit our lifestyle accordingly.

The overall natural look doesn’t depend solely on the kitchen units; accessories are also very important. It matters which handles, crockery, lamps, rugs and so on we choose, as the same furniture can create a completely different effect when paired with different complementary elements.

If we love nature so much, it’s worth thinking about protecting our environment too. Let’s not forget that the better the quality of the kitchen furniture we choose, the longer we can enjoy it in its original splendour, and the later it will be before it ends up in the rubbish.
