With well-designed lighting, we can create a cosy atmosphere in the kitchen; what’s more, the right lighting plays a very important role in terms of functionality too. We’d like to offer a few tips on how to tackle this task, which may seem complicated at first.
A kitchen lighting You should start planning once you’ve decided on the basic layout of your kitchen and know where the various cooking areas will be located. It’s very important not to realise that something isn’t quite right only after the kitchen has been completed, as making changes afterwards can be very costly.
Functional light fittings
First, let’s look at the areas where good lighting is essential for our activities. After all, we’ll need adequate lighting for food preparation – yes, we do use knives – as well as for cooking and cleaning. Let’s not forget the worktops, the kitchen island, the hob and the sink. Both pendant lights and spotlights can be good solutions, but in a more modern kitchen, we could even install LED strips above the kitchen island. We should also consider whether there is enough light when, for example, we’re trying to find something in a kitchen cupboard; if not, we should get creative and find a solution to the problem.
Decorative lighting
The whole point of decorative lighting is to draw attention to specific corners of the kitchen. You can use it to highlight objects, architectural features or even works of art displayed in the kitchen. To give a simple example, if you’re a coffee lover, you could create a coffee corner with a stylish coffee machine; when lit up, this will be the first thing you notice when you walk into the kitchen.
But lighting design doesn’t end at the worktop and above it. Lights fitted beneath the base units or under the kitchen island, for example, can illuminate the pathways, creating a modern look.
Mood lighting
Natural light is best, but we don’t always have enough windows in the kitchen. For mood lighting, it’s worth using lamps that give off a soft glow to illuminate the whole kitchen, or you could even opt for wall lights that provide diffused light. You won’t need many of these, as you’ll already have plenty of light to work with thanks to the design of the work surfaces and decorative lighting.
Even basic backlighting can serve as mood lighting, as it provides a soft, diffused glow. However, in modern kitchens, remote-controlled LED lights are also frequently used beneath and above the base cupboards and the kitchen island.
