Sometimes less is more. This is particularly true if you’re a fan of Scandinavian design. The kitchen is perhaps the room where minimalism is hardest to achieve, as so many functions have to be crammed into a single space… This time, we’d like to share a few ideas that you can confidently apply even in small kitchens.
Choose white
If you’re only considering a small kitchen, there’s a good chance the end result will look cluttered. To avoid this, it’s worth using light colours, as these make the space appear more open. Feel free to choose light-coloured kitchen units and walls; with the right accessories, it won’t look sterile. What’s your favourite colour? Choose décor and appliances in that shade, as everything goes with white.
Bring nature closer to you
People living in the Scandinavian countries have a close connection with nature, and they like to incorporate this into their homes. This is precisely why they love wooden floors and are keen to choose wooden dining sets or accessories. A key feature of Scandinavian kitchens is therefore the use of wood or wood-effect materials, which softens the minimalism that many find „austere”. Beige and brown go beautifully with white kitchen units anyway; if you combine them, the end result is sure to be well-balanced.
Use pendant lights
Scandinavians love pendant lights! Which is no surprise, as they provide excellent lighting and can be used to illuminate individual areas of the kitchen, such as the dining area. What’s more, they’re available in countless colours and shapes, so you’re sure to find one you’ll like. It can be dark or light, but do make sure it harmonises with the rest of your kitchen’s accessories.
Modern technology in the kitchen
Scandinavians love all sorts of gadgets, which can be really practical in the kitchen too. It’s now standard to be able to control the heating via a mobile app, but how about a smart coffee machine or a remotely controlled dishwasher? Don’t go overboard, but it’s worth thinking through the options to see if you can find something that makes your daily life easier.
Aim for simplicity
Open shelves are a common feature in Hungarian kitchens, where we store all sorts of things, such as mugs, cereal bowls, cookbooks, etc. Scandinavian design doesn’t entirely rule out this option either, but the fact is that they prefer closed kitchen cupboards, so the clean, uncluttered look isn’t disrupted by a jumble of objects. If you’re looking for a compromise between the two, opt for kitchen cupboards with glass doors; this way, your items remain visible but still look a little tidier. In a small kitchen, it’s worth keeping things even tidier anyway, as even one or two items left out can give the impression of clutter.
