High-gloss vs. matt – which should I choose?

Acrylic surfaces are becoming increasingly popular in the kitchen, as, as well as being visually appealing, they are incredibly durable and easy to clean. This applies to both high-gloss and matt finishes. If we have to choose, which one should we go for?

High-gloss acrylic kitchen furniture

Nowadays, it is by no means considered bold to choose high-gloss surfaces for our kitchens, as their use has become commonplace in almost every area of interior design. They lend the room an elegant look, and with a subtle colour scheme, the overall effect will not be at all ostentatious – unless, of course, that is precisely our aim.

Don’t forget that high-gloss acrylic surfaces reflect light, so their colour may vary depending on the colour of the light falling on them. We’d like to emphasise here just how important it is to plan the lighting properly! Furthermore, a glossy surface also reflects the other visible colours in the room, so when considering the kitchen as a whole, choosing a harmonious colour scheme becomes even more important than usual.

This surface is easy to clean. Many people are put off by it, as they believe that this type of surface can never be maintained in such a way that it remains looking good. This is a misconception; it is not true at all. If you’d like to find out more about this topic, we’ve written a more detailed blog post on cleaning high-gloss kitchen units.

As light reflects around a room, if you choose high-gloss fronts, you can be sure that the room will appear larger and more open. The lighter the colour you choose, the larger and brighter the room will appear.

Who is this not recommended for?

The fact is that fingerprints show up more clearly on a glossy surface, so if your little ones like to run about and touch everything in the kitchen, we’d recommend opting for the matt version.

Matt finishes do not absorb light either, but reflect it off their surface. However, this certainly lends a more understated look than if we were to choose a high-gloss front. To the more adventurous, this might seem a bit dull, but we would rather describe it as understatedly elegant.

If you want a consistent, uniform colour finish, we definitely recommend matt fronts. No matter which angle you look at it from, a high-quality matt surface will have a uniform colour from every angle.

The matt finish is durable and scratch-resistant; what’s more, unlike high-gloss finishes, it doesn’t show fingerprints and smudges as much.

Who is this not recommended for?

As it does not reflect light but rather absorbs it, we do not recommend using it in very small rooms, regardless of the colour combination. If you do not have a very large space available, opt for white and light shades.

We don’t necessarily have to choose between glossy and matt finishes; we can also combine the two. But whatever we decide, good quality is very important (as well) with these finishes, otherwise we won’t really be satisfied with the result in the long run.
