In the past, corners were the bane of kitchen design. Most corner cupboards in kitchens weren’t particularly functional, but fortunately technology has come a long way since then. Nowadays, making the most of every little bit of space in the kitchen is no problem at all!
Base cabinet with pull-out units
Corner units in the lower cabinet row are the most popular and widespread. They fit perfectly into the corner, allowing you to make the most of a space that is often left unused. Thanks to the corner hinges, the doors open and close effortlessly. A major advantage of the shelved, pull-out rotating units is that the contents of the cupboard are easy to see and access. They are ideal for storing saucepans, baking tins and dry foodstuffs. If you choose a version where the corner hinges can be attached to the door without screws, cleaning will be even easier, as they can be easily removed, even temporarily.
Blind base unit
This is an outdated design, so we don’t really tend to recommend it. It essentially consists of two base units joined together, one of which is longer and fits into the corner. The contents of both units can only be accessed via a single door, which is very inconvenient as it offers no visibility at all. Without shelves, it is very difficult to reach the items at the back of the corner unit. We can’t even show you a picture of it because it’s so old-fashioned. We simply want to point out that if you come across something like this, you’d be better off looking elsewhere, as there are far more convenient solutions available.
Corner drawers
Although corner cupboards with swivel doors are the most popular, so-called corner drawers are starting to come into fashion. In fact, they look like two base kitchen cupboards, each with two or three drawers. However, the drawers do not open separately but together, being connected at a 90-degree angle. It sounds a bit complicated when described in words, so let the pictures speak for themselves.
And what about the top corners?
Open shelves
The shelves can easily be fitted into a corner, but we should always bear in mind that the items on them will need to be kept tidy at all times, and they will inevitably gather dust. There are some rooms where, for example, due to the position of the windows, a row of wall units is simply not a viable option; we’ll show you an example of this too.
Top corner cupboard
It is a rather rarely used solution, but there are examples of it. It is a freestanding cabinet to which no other components are attached.
