Kitchens and Styles 7 – Mid-century modern kitchens

Not sure which kitchen style to choose? Would you like to find out as much as possible about styles and interior design trends? Are you interested in the latest trends? Or perhaps your heart is set on classic designs?  In our new series, we’ll be taking a closer look at the different styles so that you have all the information you need to make a decision, and so that your new kitchen really is exactly as you want it. And, of course, we’ll provide all the help you need with the installation too.

In the 1950s and 1960s, interior design reached new heights. One after another came the design pieces that have since become legendary – just think of the fantastic Eames chairs, Arne Jacobsen’s wonderfully clean-lined designs, or Eero Saarinen’s elegant pieces.

A revolution was taking place in the world of design,

and this was reflected in homes of the time, all over the world. After the war, it became particularly important for people to create a real home, and this era saw the emergence of home interiors that were often stunningly aesthetic and/or incredibly cosy.

And now the style has been given a new lease of life. Classic pieces look fantastic even in modernised interiors, and the style’s hallmarks – having undergone a slight modernisation – have reappeared in the work of the most popular interior designers, and consequently in more and more homes.

This style is known as Mid-century modern. It is minimalist, yet cosy. It is stylish, but not overbearing.

But how can you incorporate this into your kitchen?

It’s simple. Kitchen units with clean, angular lines work really well with this style, especially white, wooden and more colourful pieces. You can even mix and match them! For example, it can look brilliant if, in your all-white kitchen, one of the cupboards is blue. It isn’t distracting, yet it catches the eye.

All you need to do is complement your minimalist kitchen furniture with a few accessories. Think, for example, of classic-style wooden or metal bar stools, classic-style dining chairs (or replicas), quilted cushions…
