Do you know what contemporary interior design is?

If you say it’s about the modern style, you’re not far from the truth. The two terms are often confused (even within professional circles), and not without reason. There are numerous similarities between the modern and contemporary styles, though there are also some important differences.

First of all, let’s look at the similarities.

Both styles are characterised by clean, often angular lines, the use of cool colours, and the avoidance of a chaotic effect; in other words, in modern and contemporary homes, you don’t often find open shelving, but the use of various concealed, built-in cupboards and storage units is all the more common.

Contemporary and modern interior design tends to favour the use of metal, matt-finished wood, concrete and glass. However, when it comes to metal, it is important to note that we are not talking about traditional iron, but rather stainless steel or chrome.

This modern style is characterised by strong Bauhaus, Scandinavian and German influences. You won’t see any Gothic ornamentation or Baroque forms, but straight lines are a common feature.

And how do the two styles differ?

In the case of the modern style, we can speak of a phenomenon with relatively consistent characteristics, whereas the contemporary style is constantly changing, moment by moment. It borrows elements from numerous other styles and often brightens up an essentially cool interior with colourful, vibrant pieces.

The hallmark of contemporary design is often that genuine „wow” factor – when you step into a home like this, you’re bound to be amazed. Quite simply, it’s a stunning sight.

However, there is another important argument in favour of contemporary interior design: aesthetics do not take precedence over functionality; a contemporary home is practical and liveable – in short, it is simply good design.

This is particularly important in the kitchen. A beautiful, minimalist but impractical kitchen looks great in showrooms, but it can turn even the simple task of making a packet of soup into a nightmare.
