5 things you should know about high-gloss kitchen units

High-gloss kitchen units are real eye-catchers; depending on the design, they can hold their own in both elegant and extravagant interiors. We’d now like to highlight a few things worth considering before you make your final decision.

So is it expensive or not?

It is commonly believed that high-gloss kitchen units fall into a very expensive price bracket. It is true that they are not the cheapest option, but it is worth considering not only the purchase price, but also how long the furniture in question will remain in good condition. It’s worth buying high-gloss kitchen furniture if you have a budget large enough to pay for good quality. Lower-quality versions will, in fact, prove disappointing very quickly. On the other hand, if we choose high-quality pieces, we can expect them to last an exceptionally long time. So, if we consider how long our kitchen will retain its original splendour for a relatively high price, we can certainly say that it offers very good value for money.

The perfect choice, even for a small kitchen

It is a misconception that high-gloss furniture only works in larger spaces. In fact, the opposite is true. In small spaces, it is best to choose units that reflect natural and artificial light as much as possible. This makes the space appear larger. If you only have a room with a small floor area, opt for light-coloured and glossy surfaces.

That’s not true either: it’s difficult to clean

Many people think that high-gloss kitchen units are difficult to clean. Yet the cleaning process itself is no more complicated than it is for a matt finish. Whatever material your kitchen units are made of, it is extremely important to clean and maintain them regularly and properly. This is the only way to ensure they remain looking good in the long term. With high-gloss fronts, the biggest problem is not the cleaning products themselves, but the tools used – cloths, sponges – which can often cause damage. This is because if you choose materials with an overly rough surface, they can easily scratch the finish. You can read more about cleaning high-gloss kitchen units in one of our previous articles.

The visual experience is not always consistent

And this is not due to any fault in the quality of the furniture. The high-gloss finish reflects the light entering the room, so its colour and other quality characteristics determine the colour in which we perceive our kitchen furniture. This is why it is important to plan the room’s lighting carefully, whilst bearing in mind that we cannot influence changes in natural light – as the sun’s rays strike the room differently at different times of day. We do not necessarily regard this as a problem; we simply wish to draw the attention of those interested to the fact that, should this be a concern for them, they should also take this factor into account when making their choice.

Not recommended for children

Unless, of course, there’s a cleaning fanatic in the family. That’s because fingerprints show up much more easily on high-gloss surfaces. And children generally love to touch everything – which isn’t a problem in itself – but this means that high-gloss furniture won’t really look its best.
