1. Design of electrical connections

 

Proper planning of electrical sockets is essential in a modern kitchen, where we use a wide range of electrical appliances. The location and number of electrical sockets must be carefully planned so that every appliance can be conveniently connected.

 

Positioning of connectors

  • Above the worksheet: At least 60 cm above the worktop to prevent water splashes. It is recommended to install a socket every 60–80 cm above the worktop.
  • Islands and peninsulas: If the kitchen units include a kitchen island or peninsula, you’ll need sockets there too, so that you can use your kitchen appliances comfortably.
  • Kitchen appliances: Larger appliances such as fridges, ovens, microwave ovens, dishwashers and extractor hoods require their own separate circuits.

 

Lighting

  • Work surface lighting: To ensure adequate lighting, we recommend fitting LED strips or spotlights beneath the wall units.
  • General lighting: Ceiling lights, recessed spotlights or chandeliers can provide general lighting.
  • Decorative lighting: Mood lighting on top of the wall units or at the base of the base units, which also enhances the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen units.

 

2. Plumbing

 

Plumbing work must also be completed before the kitchen units are fitted, as this ensures the water supply and waste water drainage. Correct installation of the plumbing is essential for kitchen appliances to function properly.

 

Placement of water outlets

  • Sink: When deciding where to position the sink, you should also take into account the location of the water supply and the waste pipe. The ideal position is under the worktop, directly behind the sink.
  • Dishwasher: The dishwasher’s water inlet must be close to the sink so that it can be easily connected to the water and waste water pipes.
  • Water filter and fridge: If your kitchen has a fridge fitted with a water filter or a water dispenser, a separate water supply is required for these as well.

 

Siphons and pipework

  • Siphon: The trap fitted beneath the sink ensures that waste water is drained away and prevents unpleasant odours from rising back up.
  • Pipework: Pipes must be positioned so that they do not obstruct the use of cupboards and drawers.

 

3. Ventilation and steam extraction

 

Ensuring that the kitchen is well-ventilated and that steam is extracted is essential to prevent unpleasant odours and condensation.

 

Cooker hood

  • Accommodation: The cooker hood must be positioned directly above the hob. Care must be taken to ensure that the distance between the cooker hood and the hob is adequate (usually 65–75 cm).
  • Performance: The performance of the cooker hood should be tailored to the size of the kitchen and the type of hob. It is important to ensure sufficient airflow for effective extraction.
  • Ventilation pipes: The correct positioning and insulation of the ventilation ducts connected to the extractor fan are essential for efficient operation and noise reduction.

 

4. Gas pipes and safety regulations

 

When using gas appliances, it is particularly important to ensure that gas pipework and safety regulations are complied with.

Installation of gas pipes

  • Gas leak: The position of the gas outlet must be such that it is located directly behind the gas appliance, at the minimum distance from the appliance.
  • Valves: A separate shut-off valve must be fitted to every gas appliance, in an easily accessible location, so that the gas supply can be shut off quickly if necessary.

 

Ventilation and safety

  • Gas leak detector: A gas leak detector installed in the kitchen ensures safety and provides a timely warning in the event of a leak.
  • Ventilation: Gas appliances require adequate ventilation, so it is important that the kitchen is well ventilated and that the extractor fan works effectively.
